What should your Body Composition look like and why is it important?
When we go to the doctor to get a check up they usually give you a number called your BMI (body mass index) and they tell you that you should fall within a certain range (between here and here). But they don't tell you a damn thing about what it means. Well honestly, its outdated and inaccurate in my opinion, so we use a much more interesting and accurate way. It's called Body Composition, and this will give you your Body Fat, Fat Mass, Lean Body Weight (muscle weight). There are a few different ways you can go about getting these numbers, and we usually use skinfold calipers. Here's an example below of where you should be on the chart!👇

Why is Body Composition Important?
A Body Fat % equal or greater than 25% in Men, and equal or greater than 30% in Women, places you into the obese category, which places you at risk for many health problems. Yes those numbers are accurate. As an obese person, you are more likely to suffer from diabetes, heart attack, heart disease, sleep apnea, depression and stroke. Day-to-day life may also be harder because simple tasks become harder to accomplish when carrying around extra weight.
What Can You Do about it?
If these health indicators are in an unhealthy range , consider making lifestyle changes. Choosing to eat a healthy whole-food diet filled with lean meats, whole grains, fruits, vegetables, low fat dairy products and nuts will help you lose weight. Monitoring your caloric intake by eating smaller-portion sizes will also help you lower your BF%. Exercise five days a week for 30-60 minutes each day to stay healthy and reach a better BF%.
