ARE YOU STRESSED?
'How Stress Can Effect Your Weight Loss Efforts and Performance Goals'
Are you stressed? Most people do not even hesitate when asked that question. It is a quick “YES”.
Did you know stress can effect your weight loss efforts, performance goals, social life? The list goes on and on.... When we are stressed the body produces excess cortisol. An adrenal hormone that is important in keeping the body in balance. Sounds good, right?
The problem when we are stressed is our body never reaches the balance it desires and keeps producing the hormone. Higher and more prolonged levels of cortisol have been shown to have a negative effect on our health and weight management. Here are a few problems associated with excess cortisol:
- Impaired cognitive performance
- Dampened thyroid function
- Blood sugar imbalances, such as hyperglycemia
- Decreased bone density
- Sleep disruption
- Decreased muscle mass (which means slower metabolism and decreased performance
)
- Elevated blood pressure
- Lowered immune function
- Slow wound healing
- Increased abdominal fat
This last one, increased abdominal fat, has a stronger correlation to certain health problems than fat deposited in other areas of the body. Some of the health problems associated with increased stomach fat are heart attacks, strokes, higher levels of “bad” cholesterol (LDL) and lower levels of “good” cholesterol (HDL), which can lead to other health problems. As you can tell many of those problems are the same ones that can have a large effect on our health and our weight. There are a bunch of different ways that we can combat stress.
- Exercise
- Massage
- Meditation
- Hobby
- Nutrition
