“If your ‘Health and Fitness’ is at the top of your priority list and you’re ready to take back control, then this is for YOU!” -- Extremely Satisfied ‘Post-Lockdown Project’ Fitness Warrior
How do we decide and measure what our priorities are?
Years ago a mentor of mine told me that my actions will dictate what my priorities are. If you do something every day then you consider it a priority in your life. Furthermore, saying something is important to you doesn't mean you actually prioritize it in your life. True priorities are defined by your actions, not your words.
In 2017 I went to visit my longtime friend, mentor and coach. This was the fitness coach that had helped guide me through several years of competing as an athlete in sport of fitness . The visit was not training related, but rather to collaborate on a coaching education and entrepreneurship . . When I arrived at his training center I commented, "I haven't been here is over a year." His response to me was, "Yep, competing in fitness just isn't your priority anymore."
To be honest, it hurt to hear that because at the time I was still identifying myself as an athlete and competitor in fitness. I was simply takin g a break so that I could be more productive in building our businesses . In hindsight, he was absolutely right. My priority had shifted. Coaching and family were more important to me than being the fittest person in the sport and as a res ult, I wasn't making extra time to be coach ed much anymore .
And When big changes happen, your priorities get called into question very fast . . . . What do you let go of? What do you hold onto with all your might?
So here we are in 2020. POST- Coronavirus aka ‘POST-LOCKDOWN’ just after this “ man made virus” swept its way across the world. The public health, so cial, and economic impacts has already affected billions of lives. Many of us we re sheltering in our homes in order to help dampen the spread of this . Everything has been flipped upside down for many people and routines have drastically changed are still changing daily. Things that were priorities for some have suddenly fallen off the radar completely to make room for other more important things.
As a health and fitness professional, I'm paying close attention to where I have seen and am continuing to see health and fitness priorities shift for people.
Are you in the camp of seeing your health and fitness priorities get lost or have you moved them further up your list?
If you at some point through the pandemic found yourself inside for two weeks and you h ad not gotten a single workout in despite being a regular gym-goer for years, don't sweat it. But as we phase into the ‘POST-LOCKDOWN’ and back into some type of normalcy, NOW is when you really MUST think about your priorities ….And overall health and wellness should most certainly be at the top of everyone’s list!
The reality of the ‘Quarantine’ situation is that Grief showed up in many forms ….. Denial, Frustration , Bargaining , Sadness , Acceptance . Give yourself permission to adop t a new way of life. Don't judge yourself for eating junk food during this time , not working out, not getting your full night sleep hours, and for simply just trying to hide from reality. We have all done some of this. Instead, I invite you to simply reflect on your actions through the pandemic and make adjustments necessary, and continue to take notice of your actions each and every day ‘POST-LOCKDOWN’ .
What are you putting time towards, and what are you not putting energy into?
THIS IS ALL ABOUT TO CHANGE WITH THE ‘POST-LOCKDOWN’ SOLUTION !
It is time to get curious and ask questions
Approach this with curiosity and not judgment. Do not allow your actions to be controlled by grief.
As healt h and fitness is my area of expertise, h ere are just a few questions you can start to ask.
Why do I exercise?
In the absence of a gym or good equipment, what do I really connect to about fitness?
Why is quality food important to me?
Why do I ALWAYS want to get good sleep each night?
What value is there to turning off the shows earlier? What value is there to watching another show late at night?
Why have I followed thoughtful training programs in the past?
If nobody was to ever see my body again, would I care about looking a certain way?
MOST IMPORTANT: What can the future hold for you?
Now, as we find ourselves on the oth er side of Coronavirus and as we re-engage in a life that resembles our old normal, I wonder if yours and my priorities will be the same. Many of the things I used to stress about, put energy towards, and prioritize in my life seem to be much less stressful, if any at all . Many of the things that I have always done remain staples for me every single day right now. And lastly, there are a handful of actions that I used to not prioritize that feel so rich and valuable to me now that I want to continue to prioritize them going forward.
